Experimental investigation of excited-state lifetimes in atomic ytterbium.
Lifetimes of twenty-one excited states in atomic Yb were measured using time-resolved fluorescence detection following pulsed laser excitation. The lifetime of the 4f145d6s D1 state, which is of particular importance for a proposed study of parity nonconservation in atoms, was measured to be 380(30) ns.
متن کاملExcited-state lifetimes of far-infrared collective modes in proteins.
Vibrational excitations of low frequency collective modes are essential for functionally important conformational transitions in proteins. Here we report the first direct measurement on the lifetime of vibrational excitations of the collective modes at 87 pm (115 cm(-1)) in bacteriorhodopsin, a transmembrane protein. The data show that these modes have extremely long lifetime of vibrational exc...
متن کاملEvaluation of single-photon-counting measurements of excited-state lifetimes.
An extremely short instrumental response function for a single-photon-counting system has been obtained by using a low-jitter photomultiplier tube, fast amplification of the single photoelectron pulse from this photomultiplier, a constant fraction discriminator with a wide bandwidth input, and a stable reference timing signal. This synchronously mode-locked laser system has been shown to be cap...
متن کاملExcited-state reversible geminate reaction. I. Two different lifetimes
We obtain an accurate long-time solution for the diffusive kinetics of an excited geminate pair dissociating reversibly in solution, where the excited-state lifetimes of the bound and unbound states may be nonequal. We analyze the long-time asymptotic behavior, finding a transition between two types of behaviors. In region A, the excited bound pair decays as t exp(2t/t08), where t08 is the life...
متن کاملThree-dimensional simulations of reversible bimolecular reactions. II. The excited-state target problem with different lifetimes
We report a first microscopic simulation for the diffusional kinetics of a reversible excited-state reaction, A1B↔ AB, where A and AB have different lifetimes and the B-particles are in excess. When the excited species equilibrate fast compared with the excited-state lifetimes, one obtains the pre-equilibrium approximation. The full time-dependence in this case is approximated by a shifted infi...
